概述
二十一世纪初，随着网络带宽、计算机处理能力和存储容量的快速提高，视频监控步入了全数字化的网络时代，称为第三代网络视频监控系统。第三代网络视频监控系统取代以数字录像机为代表的第二代数字监控系统，以网络为依托，以数字视频的压缩、传输、存储和播放为核心。网络视频监控也分为很多种类型，从最初不成系统的简单客户端连接到前几年应用最广泛的基于中心管理服务器的网络视频监控系统，通过流媒体转发、网络存储等先进技术，充份地满足了当前日益增长的视频联网需求，解决了多级、多层次的视频管理，朝着“超大规模”和“超广地域”的视频监控方向发展。由于网络的日益庞大，平均一个工作人员要管理成百上千个监控视频。大部分视频其实处于没有被监视，时间一过就删除的境地。如何有效运行运营庞大的视频监控网络成为一个突出问题。
新一代智能视频监控系统应运而生。它以智能实用的图像分析为特色，既可以通过智能分析及时发现紧急事件，又能透过对于图像的摘要分析有效管理海量视频，引发了视频监控行业的技术革命。监控基于移动检测告警的方法由于误警率高，不能解决日益庞大的监控网络规模与有限的人力的矛盾，新一代智能视频分析在安全领域显得尤为重要。
但要做好视频分析却面临巨大的技术挑战。挑战主要是来源于动态复杂背景区域的背景建模，前景提取，以及人员稠密城市区域场景目标跟踪，分类检索算法等。当前视频监控解决方案市场商机无限，通过视频分析，视频数据得到充分的利用，视频数据视频监控市场预期在未来将会更加快速的发展。
本文将谈及视频分析遇到的挑战和解决它们的一些技术。第二章简单介绍视频分析、其技术挑战及视频分析的应用范围。第三章介绍应用于事后事件浏览的视频摘要、检索和鉴证（包括人脸识别）。第四章介绍线索发现跟踪、事件检测和移动监控技术。第五章是厂商介绍。最后一章是本文的小结。
